Members of the U.S. House of Representatives interrupted their summer recess for a special one-day session on Aug. 10 to pass a $26 billion funding package that will save thousands of educators' jobs and help states maintain vital public services. The 247-161 vote in the House, along with last week's vote in the Senate, is "the ultimate indication of who's for kids and who isn't," says AFT president Randi Weingarten.

Retirement Reform Bill Passes Senate, Fight Moves to House
The retirement bill passed the Senate and now moves to the House. Sen. Mickey Switalski was the only Democrat to vote yes, Sen. Roger Kahn (Saginaw) was the only Republican to vote no. The fight to preserve retirement now moves to the Michigan House. Please send an email to your Representative today.

The Early Retirement Proposal has turned into a Benefit Reduction Plan and we need your help to stop it. The Governor proposed a plan to “encourage” educators to retire this year by proposing a “carrot and stick” approach. The bill, SB 1227, Sub. S-6, has been transformed by the Senate into a straight out cut to retirement benefits and we need your help to stop it!
The Legislature is currently on a two-week vacation but will take up the bill unless they feel enough pressure. Please send the email to your Senator and tell them they are trying to rush through complex legislation and force people to make decision that will affect the rest of their lives. If this passes, the state will not be keeping promises it made to current employees. Speak-up before your retirement is less than you expected. Click here to send a letter to your State Senator.

Retirement is Safe for Now
On Thursday, March 25, the Michigan Senate did NOT vote on the proposal to "encourage" school personnel to retire. The proposal has not gone away, but will come back again in mid-April. We will keep you posted on any developments.

On Tuesday, March 23, the Senate Retirement Subcommittee reported out the retirement bill after making some significant changes, basically what was a “carrot and stick” approach to getting people to retire has turned into a “stick only” approach. This bill is expected to be voted on in the full Senate Appropriations Committee on Wednesday afternoon and the full Senate on Thursday.
